Glass Façade with Supporting Steel Superstructure for a Parking Garage

When downtown Cincinnati decided to spruce up Fountain Square, Avenue Fabricating, Inc. was contracted to upgrade the adjacent parking garage façade. A complicated job, we were responsible for manufacturing structural steel columns made from 10" XXS pipe, which feature close to 1" thick walls, and tying these columns into the existing structure. Using the same pipe, we manufactured supports for the columns for the glass façade. The base of each column featured a cantilevered beam, custom made out of plate to provide an aesthetic slope.

Throughout this project we used an array of materials, and the total job tonnage was 900 tons. For surface preparation, we used SSPC-SPC6 on all material. We also used wide flange beams grade A992; channels, squares, and angles grade A36; and pipe and HSS grade A500-GrB. For all SSPC-SP6 structural steel, we applied a 3-coat epoxy system. We upheld a tight tolerance of 1/16" throughout the manufacturing process, and the project took 12 months to complete.
